Pregnancy and Birth

Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine

Acupuncture and TCM provide a safe, effective, drug-free and natural approach to treating infertility and enjoying a healthy pregnancy.  Here are a few reasons to try acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine for your fertility needs:

  • An acupuncturist does not treat just symptoms and signs, but instead activates the body’s natural healing potential by treating the root causes that have lead to problem or disease
  • Acupuncture and TCM are completely natural.  No drugs are ever used.  In the Western treatment of infertility, undesired side effects and accumulated toxicity from invasive procedures and drug therapies may occur.
  • Acupuncture and TCM can be used to strengthen, support and balance overall health and well-being, so other fertility procedures are more effective.
  • The practice of acupuncture and TCM is over 3,000 years old, and has helped millions of people become well and stay healthy
  • It works!!!

Also consider acupuncture during your pregnancy and birth.  According to the World Health Organization (WHO), acupuncture has been found useful for relieving labor pain, nausea, vomiting and significantly reducing the duration of labor.  There is also strong evidence that acupuncture can help with a breech birth.

Doula

General Definition of a Doula

A doula accompanies a woman in labor to support a birth experience by providing physical, emotional and informational support.

A doula works for you, not for your care provider or the hospital.

A doula does not perform clinical tasks such as fetal heart rate monitoring or blood pressure.

A doula provides information and support based on her experience/education but does not make any decisions for you.

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves” and is now used to refer to a trained and experienced professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and just after birth; or who provides emotional and practical support during the postpartum period.

Studies have shown that when doulas attend birth, labors are shorter with fewer complications, babies are healthier and they breastfeed more easily.

What you can expect from your Doula

Your doula will be on call for you 2 weeks prior and 2 weeks past your estimated due date (EDD), 24 hours/day.  She will not travel further than 150km from the estimated place of birth within the Annapolis Valley, for those 4 weeks.

Your doula will provide 2 prenatal visits, attend as much of your labour and delivery as you wish and provide 1 post natal visit.

In the event that labour exceeds 24 hours, your doula may call a back up doula to care for you while she rests.  You have the option of meeting this back up doula in advance if you desire.

What your Doula expects from you

We will contact our doula as soon as we think that we are in labour.

We will contact our doula when we feel we need her and understand that it may take her 1-2 hours to arrange childcare for her own children and to get there.

We will discuss our preferences with our doula and clearly state our choices to her.  She will support our choices.

This is your birth and you have the power and control of your birth at all times.  Your doula is part of YOUR team!
